Outdoor Fireplaces—Combine Beauty with Safety in Bergen County

An outdoor fireplace is not just for winter months in Bergen County.  It’s a year round, go-to gathering spot perfect for chatting, and roasting weenies and marshmallows. A fire pit provides warmth, creates a relaxing atmosphere, gets the conversation going and is a perfect addition to a romantic evening.

Before you go shopping for the perfect fireplace, speak to your gardenscape designer and do some research.  Educate yourself about the variety of materials, decide on location, make sure it’s environmentally sound and, most importantly, know how to operate it safely.

Your landscape/hardscape designer is a great source of information.  They’ll have lots of ideas that include safety first.  Here are just a few things to think about:

Tips for including an outdoor fireplace in your Bergen County landscaping

#1: A first thing first—does your community permit outdoor fireplaces?  Be sure to check with your local fire department for any appropriate restrictions.

#2: Outdoor fireplaces are more than just a hole in the ground.  Think about how it will be used.  Do you entertain a lot?  Consider placing your outdoor fireplace on or near the patio.  Want to give the impression of a larger yard?  Try placing the fireplace further back; it will draw people there.  Tip in a Tip:  Remember that ashes are a by-product of wood fireplaces.  Ash may stain if it lands on your light-colored patio.

#3:  You may have the perfect place for your fireplace; be sure to avoid flammable surfaces like wooden decks.   Consider concrete or stone.  Speak with your landscape designer or fire department—a good rule of thumb is 10 ft. from buildings.  When you or your lawn service is performing yard maintenance, be sure to clean up any rubbish, leaves, etc. near the fireplace.

#4: Safety first, last and always.   Have a garden hose turned on and ready to use, or keep a bucket of water or dirt nearby in case you need to extinguish the flames. Flames are tempting; keep children, pets, and guests at least 3 feet away from the fire. Never leave a burning fire unattended. Carry your cell phone in case you need to call the fire department.

#5: Get out there and enjoy it.  With the help of a professional landscape designer, your outdoor fireplace can be the focal element of your gardenscape.  Make it a destination point for family and friends to gather.
